Ben Chaluim, May 2025

Camped at Ben Chaluim to check out the SRUC agroforestry project behind the research farm.

The farm was deserted. Nobody around in the farmyard itself or the cabins beside it. Nobody around, in fact, the whole time I was there, apart from the same pleasant middle-aged hill walker when I was arriving and when I was leaving the next morning.

The agroforestry project didn’t look too healthy, to be honest. A lot of appropriate native trees have been planted at the top of the glen – birch, willow, alder, etc. – but they don’t seem to be taking too well, and there aren’t many new saplings.

The established woodland around the river further down the glen is in much better shape. It doesn’t seem like the paths through it have seen much traffic in a few years, and a footbridge across the river is closed as a safety hazard (to be fair, it looks like one).

I really like the Electric Shepherd, and the dead ram. The hole in in the rocks is actually a badger sett – I walked past it while it was taking a load off outside, and it bustled back underground.

On APX100, developed in Rodinal. Solid combination.
